Where to Start Reading British Zombie Apocalypse Fiction

New to JC Mitchell's zombie novels? Here's the simplest way in — from the free prequel to the first novel, and how the two series fit together.

Where to Start Reading British Zombie Apocalypse Fiction

If you've just found JC Mitchell's zombie apocalypse novels and you're not sure where to begin, you're in the right place. This guide walks you through the easiest entry point and how the two series connect.

Start with the free prequel

The shortest way in is The First Death, a free prequel novella that takes you back to the very first moments of the outbreak. It's a self-contained story — you don't need to have read anything else — and it sets up the world that the full novels explore.

Then read Book One: No One Dies Once

After the prequel, jump straight into No One Dies Once, the first novel in The Zombie Fall of Britain series. This is where the collapse really begins — the first nine days, the discovery of the rule that the dead don't stay dead, and the ordinary people trying to make sense of it.

Do I need to read in order?

Yes. Each book picks up the next chapter of the fall, so the story builds best read in sequence. The full reading order is on the Books in Order page.

How do the two series connect?

The Zombie Fall of Britain and The Fordsham Chronicles are set in the same outbreak and the same falling nation. You can read either first, but together they tell the wider story of how Britain was lost — one following the fall of a nation, the other following one family trying to stay together.

The quick reading order

  1. The First Death (free prequel novella)
  2. No One Dies Once (Zombie Fall of Britain, Book 1)
  3. The Roads Are Dead (Book 2)
  4. No Safe Place (Book 3)
  5. Outbreak (The Fordsham Chronicles, Book 1) — or continue the Zombie Fall series

Happy reading — and welcome to the fall.
